Panther Girls Defeat Comets
The Rugby High School girls basketball team got a wake-up call Tuesday evening at home.
The Rolette-Wolford Comets staged a comeback in the second half of the game, with senior center/forward Lexy Wittmayer and sophomore center/forward Kinze Martinson leading the charge. Martinson scored nine points in the third quarter, including three points from the foul line on back-to-back trips within a second of each other. A 4th quarter score from Wittmayer that could’ve been a 3-point play allowed the Comets to take a one-point lead over the Panthers, which they had for almost a minute.
“We missed a lot of easy baskets in the beginning. The second half the girls came out and they were firing on all cylinders, running the offense well and hitting big shots,” said Comets head coach Tyler Bergsrud.
Senior guard Shea Heidlebaugh connected on a bomb from the far wing to give the Panthers back up by two points. A 1-for-2 trip to the line from freshman forward Karsyn Hager ended the game with the Panthers winning by three.
“We knew Heidlebaugh was their scorer. We thought they might pressure the ball with their full court defense a little more than they did. Through the game they really didn’t make any adjustments on defense, so we didn’t have to make many adjustments on offense,” Bergsrud said.
The Panther offense took advantage of the Comets committing a tipoff violation and was able to score 12 points in the first quarter. The defense held the Comets to just two points, coming from Martinson at the 4-minute mark. The Comets defense held the Panthers to nine points in the second quarter. Junior center Breanna Thompson scored seven of those points, including a 3-point play around the 2-minute mark.
“We left [the Comets] in the game with our rebounding, or lack thereof,” Brossart said. “I have every bit of confidence in these girls, they will rebound just fine, but it starts in the mental preparation.”
The Panthers have two district opponents left on the schedule: Nedrose (Monday at home, 5:45 p.m.) and Velva (Thursday, Jan. 28, at home, 4:30 p.m.) Next week the Panthers face a regional opponent in Mohall-Lansford-Sherwood on the Minot State University campus.
