Wrestlers Win at Home, Central Cass

Rugby High School wrestlers had a few busy days this week and last.

Last week Rugby competed in a tournament in Casselton.

At 106, Riley Zachmeier took second place, losing to Oakes’ Coy Awender by a 4-2 decision. To get to the round, Zachmeier beat Logan Small (New York Mills, Minn.), Preston Litton (Pembina County North), Averey Dick (Lisbon) and Patrick Calvillo (Pembina County North), all by fall.

At 126, Joey Berg defeated Dalton Hannesson (Grafton) by fall. After losing to Tristin Howard (Lisbon), Berg then defeated Michael Schill (Pembina County North) by a 10-1 major decision. Berg was defeated by Central Cass’s Chase Gross in the final consolation round by decision.

At 138, Kaden Jaeger took third place, defeating Kindred’s Trace Bakke by a 5-3 decision. Jaeger had faced Bakke earlier in the tournament, defeating him by a 10-4 decision in the quarterfinal rounds. Jaeger then fell to Ethan Elijah (Lisbon) in the semifinals before defeating Carter Shoemaker (Webster) to get to the third place round.

At 182, DJ Schneibel defeated Tyler Kuntz (South Border) for a fifth place finish. Schneibel defeated his first opponent in the tournament, Central Cass’s Jack Steffes, by fall and went on to defeat Landon Smith (LaMoure) in the quarterfinals. Schneibel was defeated in the semifinal round by Jared Roth (Oakes), and by Lisbon’s Caemon Kelly in the consolation semifinals.

Also wrestling for Rugby in the tournament were Wyatt Schmaltz (113), who fell to Austin Burgard (Oakes) and Gavin Wright (Hillsboro); Brady Volk (120), who fell to Preston Jones (Britton-Hecla) and Michael Thomas (Velva); and Spencer Koehnmstedt (285), who fell to Devin Roesler (Central Cass) and Alex Dubourt (Pembina County North), but also defeated Jocob Entzie (South Border) by fall.

The Panthers went back home and on Tuesday faced New Town and Harvey in a home triangular.

Despite changing weight classes, Zachmeier defeated Charging Eagle Matthews (New Town) and Ethan Zoblotney (Harvey), both by fall.

Berg defeated Harvey’s Derek Faul by an 11-4 decision in the 126-pound weight class.

At 138, Dylan Grove defeated Harvey’s Levi Herrington by a 10-3 decision.

DJ Schneibel, who also wrestled in two different weight classes on the night, defeated New Town’s Wesley Snow by fall, but then fell to Harvey’s Jude Lawson. Cole Schneibel fell to Harvey’s Warren Head.

Koehmstedt lost to New Town’s Bronson Flynn by fall in the 285-pound weight class.

Rugby will stay home this weekend, where they are competing in a tournament that wraps up today. On Friday, Jan. 22, they will compete in a quadrangular tournament (starting at 5 p.m.) against Des Lacs-Burlington, Mondak Thunder and Kenmare.
