Rugby Deals First Loss of Season to ORCS
In a meeting of top 10 ranked teams in Class B Girls Basketball the Rugby Panthers (#3 ranking at the time) showed Region 6 what they are all about, as they defeated the Knights of Our Reedemers Christian School (#7 at the time) 63-47. The matchup was part of Our Reedemers Invite Day on Wednesday, Dec. 30th at the MSU-Dome in Minot. Offensively, Rugby had three players in double digits with junior Breanna Thompson pouring in 20, senior Shea Heidlebaugh had 17 and 10 points contributed from sophomore Maddie Unlenkamp.
Rugby moved their record to 8-0 with the victory and used an up and down game to cruise past ORCS. Panthers lead 20-8 after the first quarter and 42-20 at the break.
“We knew coming into this season, with losing a bit of height to graduation last year, that we would need to run the floor and be in shape,” commented Head Coach Jen Brossart. Panthers have exceled in the transition game this year as well as overall teamwork effort night in and night out. “The Girls don’t hang their heads too often, and from the Seniors down to the Freshman, everyone is very encouraging of each other,” noted Brossart.
Rugby begins District 11 play this week, on the road Tuesday at TGU and home Friday night versus Westhope/Newburg.
