Madison Uhlenkamp goes up for two of Rugby's 71 points against the Benson County Wildcats

The Rugby Panthers opened their girls basketball season with a 71-47 win Monday over the Benson County Wildcats.

The Panthers took command early, scoring 15 points in the first quarter and holding the Wildcats to just four.

Sophomore Madison Uhlenkamp and senior Shea Heidlebaugh emerged as leaders in scoring for the Panthers, both scoring 18 points apiece. They were followed in scoring by junior Breanna Thompson. For the Wildcats, Dani Schwanke and Kaylee Lybeck led the way with 18 points and 13, respectively.

The Panthers led in field goals with 33 and were 2 for 5 from the free throw line. The Wildcats got 18 field goals and were 8 for 13 from the line.

The Panthers competed in the first round of the CNDC tournament Thursday in Harvey. On Dec. 10 they will travel to Minot to face the Bishop Ryan Lions at 4:15 p.m. The girls will have two games before holiday break; a home matchup against Harvey-Wells County (Dec. 15, 5:45 p.m.) and a trip to Rolla (Dec. 21, 5:45 p.m.)
