Volleyball Team Continues to Roll

By Staff | Oct 16, 2015
Solid play from seniors Shea Heidlebaugh, Ashley Schmaltz and Lauren Kraft and steady contributions from underclassmen Jacque Blessum, Sara Stier and Maria Blessum have given the Panthers a 19-10 record with a good chance to have another 20-win season

The Rugby Panthers Volleyball team had a busy playing schedule with games on a Thursday at home against Bottineau, a tournament on Saturday in Carrington, then an away game in Harvey on Tuesday. Through it all the Panthers, with consistent solid play, were able to beat Bottineau in three-straight-sets 26-24, 25-21 and 25-17, respectively. Showing a little fatigue from a 2-hour drive and an early morning start, they came in fourth in the Tournament. And then they came roaring back against Harvey with another 3-set win. The Panthers took the sets in with solid play from all their players, winning the sets 25-15, 25-10 and 25-17.

The Panthers continue to impress with solid play coming from their seasoned seniors Shea Heidlebaugh, Ashley Schmaltz and Lauren Kraft. It seems when the game’s momentum is teetering in the wrong direction one or all of these three seniors step it up and reverse the course of the game. Either, with great assists from Heidlebaugh, serves from Kraft or the digs and kills from Schmaltz they all seem to be able to inspire those around them.

With the team only having three seniors the winning ways have also come in the form of their young players, led by freshman Maria Blessum, who uses her jumping ability combined with her timing to lead the team in kills. The team has also had great consistent play coming from sophomores Jacque Blessum and Sara Stier, with strong bench play coming from sophomore Madison Uhlenkamp along with junior Abby Volk, sophomore Alissa Volk and a pair of freshmen in Karsyn Hager and Anni Stier.

The Panthers have improved their season record to 19-10 and remain undefeated in regional play with two games left in the regular season. Both games will be played in Rugby, one on Oct. 20 against Surrey and the other on Oct. 27 against Glenburn. Come to one or both and show your Panther Pride. Games start at 7:00 P.M.
