Rugby’s Cross Country runners had an opportunity to shake off the cobwebs at a meet in Jamestown last week.

Senior Jaydin Risovi (Maddock) and junior John Mueller led the pack for the boys at the Jamestown “Orr”-iginals Invitational, finishing with respective times of 14:19 and 15:01. Rounding out the top five were eighth-grader Dawson Schepp (15:17) and junior Jacob Blessum (15:22). As a team, Rugby took first with 19 points. Risovi was named individual winner.

For the girls, sophomore Tristin Lunde took second place, finishing with a 13:18 time. Teammate Ellie Duchscherer took sixth, finishing in 14:15. Grace Bachmeier, of Surrey, took first with a 13:12 time. Rugby took second as a team (77), and Jamestown took first (68).

At the meet Rugby’s runners competed in the junior varsity division, which was 1000 meters shorter than the normal varsity race distance. But Coach Bill Jansen said in an email to the Tribune that running in the JV division served another purpose.

“We ran the JV division because it was our first meet, and it allows our younger kids to run with our older kids to start building that team chemistry,” Jansen said.

The meet was held at Parkhurst Recreation Area in Jamestown.

The team competed Friday in Minot. The next meets for the team are Tuesday, Sept. 1, in Carrington and Friday, Sept. 4, in Dunseith.
