Rugby’s women softball team, the Rugby Sparks, was the Rec III Consolation Runner Up winner at the 40th annual McQuade/Budweiser Charity softball tournament this weekend in Bismarck. The tournament is USA’s largest non-profit, slow-pitch softball tournament. The tournament was founded in 1976 by Sam McQuade Sr. of McQuade Distributing Co., Inc.

Over the years the tournament has become one of Bismarck’s, if not North Dakota’s, largest events. Teams have come from neighboring places, such as Minnesota, South Dakota, and Montana; and as far away as Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Idaho, Michigan, Missouri, Nevada, Washington state and Wyoming; and from two Canadian provinces.

There were 64 teams in the Rec III bracket. The Rugby Sparks placed for the first time, bringing home the Consolation Runner-up Trophy, winning 3 out of the 5 games they played.

The Sparks are sponsored by Lee’s Bar, I Design, Joy Dental Design and Rugby Homes and RV Center.
