Tournament Going Strong As Father’s Day Tradition
For many years there was always a Rugby Fishing Tournament held at Lake Sakakawea with the winners of the tournament responsible for putting on the tournament the following year. Well, one year, whoever won the tournament failed to plan and schedule for the next year so the tournament kind of just faded away. Nine years ago Joe Tuchscherer and Wayne Hermanson decided the tournament needed to be resurrected but closer to Rugby. Joe and Wayne decided to have it at Devils Lake. This is the 9th year of doing the tournament, but according to Wayne, “We call it the 8th Annual because one summer the road was closed to Graham’s Island State Park due to flooding so we had to cancel the tournament that year.”
This year the tournament had 20 two-person teams. The entry fee was $60.00 per team with an optional Calcutta for the largest walleye, pike, white bass and perch. Each species is an extra $10.00 per team for a potential of $100.00 per team if you get in on all species. All monies collected from entry fees are paid back to the top three winners. The top five teams receive plaques. The largest fish for each species for each day receives cash and the largest fish of the weekend for each species also receives a plaque. The tournament is always held on Father’s Day weekend.
The results from the 8th Annual Rugby Fishing Invitational held June 20 & 21 at Graham’s Island on Devils Lake are as follows. 1st Place – Leigh Haagenson & Jeremy Wolf. 2nd Place – Eric Dewald & Ben Shepherd. 3rd Place – Steve Wentz & Chris Heilman. 4th Place – Rob Shepherd & Chris and Zack Shepherd. 5th Place – Tony Waswick & Ted Volk.
Wayne and Joe wanted to make sure to congratulate all the winners and thank all the participants, with a special thanks to area sponsors who make this tournament possible!
