Around this time last year, the Rugby Panthers were 0-4 before losing to the Northern Lights Comets, 5-3, in an away game.

It wasn’t the case this year, as the Panthers – 4-2 overall, 3-1 in the region – were able to win 9-3 against the Comets.

Three of the Panthers’ nine runs came from senior Eli Luna (Towner), whose first run came off a walk. Luna was able to score in the third and sixth innings.

Sophomore Anders Johnson was close behind Luna with two runs, one of which came in the sixth inning after being hit by an errant pitch from Comets sophomore Jared Loing. Runs from junior Evan Burckhard (Towner) and senior Eric Hooker in the sixth inning helped clinch the win.

The Comets were held scoreless until the second inning, after a run from freshman Austin Soukup. The next two runs didn’t come until the fifth inning, with scores from Loing and junior David Arstein.

In terms of pitching, sophomore Dillon Marco gave up one hit in four innings, struck out four batters and walked four. Johnson took over, giving up four hits in three innings, striking out three batters and walking one. For the Comets, junior Karson Schoening struck out five batters, walked three and gave up eight hits. Loing took over, giving up three hits, striking out two batters and walking one.

The Panthers’ next two games are against regional opponents. They will play the Bottineau Braves on Monday, April 27, at 4 p.m. at home, and will travel to Cando to take on the North Star Bearcats at 4:15 p.m. on Thursday, April 30.
