Rugby Boys Golf Team Off To A Strong Start
When asked how his team would fare this year Gary Myhre, Rugby High School’s Golf Coach was frank and honest about his assessment of this year’s team saying “We finished fifth in the State B golf tournament last spring in Fargo. However, we graduated four seniors including the State B Medalist, Jack McClintock, who was a three-time state place winner. We do return three seniors who have competed at a state meet as part of a team. They are Brady Fossum, Nathan Jacobsen, and Noah Kraft. I expect these three to be the leaders of this year’s team along with Junior Levi Pollman, sophomores Ben Hershey and Kyle Lashman, and freshman Brock Haakenson and Newcomer Alex Hoffert. It is a little early to tell how this team will fare in this tough golf region four with the defending state champions, Northern Lights, as competition each meet. Our second place finish last Friday was a little surprising, but it gives us great starting spot.”
Rugby Boys High School Golf scores were as follows: #1 Nathan Jacobson: 86, #2 Brady Fossum: 94, #3 Noah Kraft: 97, #4 Brock Haakenson: 97, and #5 Ben Hershey: 98
Top Idividual golfers were as follows: #1 Dalton Poitra: (NL): 74, #2 Tim Peterson: (NL): 80
#3 Casey Julson: (NL): 83, #4 Nathan Jacobson: (Rugby): 86, and #5 Quincy Marchand: (H-WC): 88
Final top 5 team Results: #1 NL: 344, #2 Rugby: 374, #3 H-WC (Harvey Wells County): 39

That great opening performance was followed up by another strong performance with Rugby again placing second this time at the Velva Meet, on April 14th.
The scoring was as follows individual golfers from Rugby: #1 Nathan Jacobson: 86, #2 Brady Fossum: 89, #3 Noah Kraft: 89, #4 Ben Hershey: 91, #5 Brock Haakenson: 97, and #6 Kyle Lashman: 113.
Top Individual golfers were as follows: #1 Dalton Poitra: 77 (NL), #2 Casey Julson: 77 (NL)
#3 Tim Peterson: 81 (NL), #4 Dom Ruhland: 82 (Garrison), and 5 Lane Ritterman: 84 (BC)
Final top 5 team results: #1 Northern Lights: 339, #2 Rugby: 355, #3 Minot Ryan: 361
#4 Bottineau: 370, #5 Benson County: 389.
When we asked Coach Gary Myhre about his team’s performance he stated “It was incredibly windy. Nathan Jacobsen continues to play some good golf. It was nice to see Brady Fossum and Noah Kraft improve their scores as well. We made up some ground on Northern Lights, but they are so tough. Minot Ryan made a move and finished only 6 strokes behind us, which gives you an idea how balanced this region is in boys golf.”
With this team maturing fast and under the tutelage of Coach Myhre this team may be special indeed.
