The Bottineau-Rugby hockey team dropped a 9-3 game against Bismarck Century on Jan. 21.

The Patriots fired 48 shots at B-R junior goaltender Ethan Clements, who finished with 38 saves. Alex Flicek scored a hat trick to lead Century, which had six other goal scorers.

“I thought we did some good things, but our lack of depth became an issue over the course of the night,” B-R coach David Hoff said in a press release. “We tried to play a JV and a varsity game with 17 players. We have several kids who need an opportunity to play, so it is tough to cancel JV games. By the end of the night we had a lot of kids with five periods in them and we only had two lines for each of the periods, so everyone played a lot.”

The Braves (8-8 overall, 5-7 West Region) scored with a Luke Amsbaugh power play goal on an assist from Braden Pewe in the first period. Amsbaugh scored again on an unassisted goal in the second period and earned an assist on a Noah Grant goal in the second.

The game came just a week after a scary incident where sophomore Karsen Ceglowski was hit from behind into the boards in a game against Hazen-Beulah.

According to Hoff, Ceglowski was moving with the aid of crutches close to a week after the incident. The defender had a fractured L3 vertebrae and a fractured pelvis. Neither injury will require surgery, but will take months to heal.

Braves notes

Amsbaugh leads the team in goals and assists with 33 and 22, respectively. Grant is second in both categories with 24 and 18, respectively. Austyn Lorenz has 18 points and Pewe and Casey Tooke round out the top five with 10 points apiece. Clements has a 7-8 record and an 81 percent save percentage.

The team played its final Rugby home game of the year against Mandan on Friday.

The regional tournament is Feb. 19-21 in Bismarck. The Braves are in sixth place out of nine teams in the West with 15 points. Bismarck High leads the division with 36 points, followed by Minot at 34 and Century at 33.
