Girls beat Stars
The Rugby High School girls basketball team is still undefeated in District 11 play thanks to a 61-49 home win over Bottineau on Jan. 23.
The win bumped the Panthers to 12-3 overall and 5-0 in the district. RHS was led by junior Shea Heidlebaugh’s 16-point performance. Classmate Ashley Schmaltz joined Heidlebaugh in double figures with 10 points.
The Stars made it uncomfortable through halftime as RHS led 32-26. The Panthers took over in the third quarter and led 50-35 heading into the final frame.
Other RHS scorers included sophomore Breanna Thompson and senior Jacie Lovcik with 9 each, senior Allison Foster with 8, senior Darby Deckert with 5 and senior ReeAnn Christianson with 4.
Bottineau was led by senior Maria Diepolder with 17 and senior Stephanie Brenden with 13.
The Panthers dropped a 76-38, non-district game Tuesday against No. 1-ranked Bishop Ryan.
The two-time defending state champions jumped on the Panthers early with leads of 22-10 and 42-20 after the first two quarters, respectively.
RHS was paced by Heidlebaugh’s 13 points, and sophomore Kari Fritel added 8.
Ryan was led by senior forward Gabbie Bohl’s 29 points. Classmate Hannah Stewart – a University of Iowa signee – had 15 points and 10 rebounds. Two other Lions scored in double figures.
The Panthers looked to keep their district record unblemished at Velva on Thursday night. The girls play today in Minot against Mohall-Lansford-Sherwood at the City Auditorium.
The team is without freshman forward Madison Uhlenkamp, who tore an ACL earlier this month.
