BOTTINEAU – The TGU boys basketball team fell to 0-1 in District 11 play with a 70-58 loss to Bottineau on Monday.

The Titans (4-6 overall) were forced to play catch-up all night as the Braves (4-6, 1-1) jumped to a 12-0 lead. Bottineau hit three of its nine 3-pointers in the opening frame and TGU never recovered.

The Titans fought back, but seldom had the deficit under double-digits.

“Our defense was good,” TGU coach Michael Corum said. “We forced them into bad shots, but our rebounding was bad and they got second chances.”

TGU senior Eli Luna scored a game-high 21 points and junior Taylor Bailey added 16 for the Titans. Bottineau was led by Jacob Kvernum’s 18 points and Parker Engelhard’s 16.

Bailey is emerging as a solid option for the Titans. He keeps the ball high in the low post and has nice shooting touch around the key.

“I just try to rebound and work hard and do what the coaches tell me,” Bailey said. “I try to be confident and play defense.”

Bottineau coach Nate Simpson was pleased with the win and sees the district as wide open after Rugby at No. 1.

“(Corum) was talking to his team and I was talking to mine that these are the games you have to win to be in the top half of the district,” Simpson said. “I was happy with how the kids responded.”
