Jaeger leads wrestlers

For area wrestling fans the Panther Booster Invite, Jan. 16-17 at Charles Hanneman Gymnasium, culminated with the 138-pound championship.

The match featured Rugby High School freshman Kaden Jaeger and Turtle Mountain Community High School freshman Jordan Eli.

Jaeger was up 8-4, but Eli tied the match at 10-10 and again at 12-12 on a reversal. With two seconds remaining in the match, Eli scored a takedown to win the title.

It was a strong tournament for Jaeger (3-1), who improved to 16-10 overall. The Panthers finished 8th overall with athletes from 23 teams competing. Carrington won the tournament at 263 points followed by Pembina County North at 194 and Napoleon at 182. Rugby had 101 points, led by Jaeger’s 24 points and senior Devon Berg (195), who scored 20 points and won the third-place match by pin at 2:54 over Carrington’s Seth Zink.

RHS eighth-grader Riley Zachmeier was 4-2 in the tournament and won fifth place by injury default. Freshman Joey Berg (113) and junior Spencer Koehmstedt (285) won seventh-place matches. Senior Reid Mundahl (152) pinned Bishop Ryan’s Konner Beeter at 3:34 to win seventh-place.

The RHS boys are in Rolla for a tournament this weekend.
