Bantams win Minot tourney

The Rugby-Bottineau Bantams won the Minot Bantam B Tournament of Champions with a 3-0 win over the Minot Wolves on Dec. 21. The team improved to 11-1-1, also taking down Crosby 3-0 and Carnduff, Saskatchewan, 5-2.

Goalie Micah Hershey made 34 saves against Crosby and 15 in the shutout against Minot. Jace Scherr had goals in all three games, including two against Carnduff.

The team took second place in the Devils Lake tournament earlier this month, beating Springfield (Manitoba) 7-1 to finish with a 3-1 tournament record.

The final game marked R-B’s largest margin of victory in the tournament. The team had six goal scorers, led by Scherr’s two. He also had an assist. Nate Haman notched a game-high two assists. Gabe Clements and Kyler Odden also had two points. R-B goalie Micah Hershey made five saves and his team fired 73 shots on goal.

The team’s only loss came in a 5-1 win for Richland (Montana). Evan Nelson scored the lone R-B goal on an assist from Odden. It was the team’s first loss of the year. Hershey made 16 saves and R-B had 32 shots on goal.

R-B beat Langdon 5-3 with Clements scoring a pair of goals on assists from Scherr. Hershey made 14 saves.

R-B beat the host team 5-2 in the opening game of the tournament. Scherr had a pair of goals and Alex Hoffert led the team in points with a goal and two assists.
