Panthers wrestle at camp in Minn.
Members of the Rugby High School wrestling program traveled to Minneapolis for the J Robinson Intensive Wrestling Camp from July 6 through July 10 at University of Minnesota.
The camp is named after and run by 28-year University of Minnesota head coach J Robinson.
The Rugby group included Joey Berg, Dylan Grove, Kaden Jaeger, Collin Kraft, Reid Mundahl, Bennie Mygland, DJ Schneibel, Brady Volk and Riley Zachmeier.
“We focused on unity as a team,” RHS coach Craig Zachmeier said. “They all went to learn and to build confidence.”
The competition-based tournament put wrestlers in eight-man brackets with competitors from around the country, including from as far as Alaska, Florida and Guam.
RHS rising senior Reid Mundahl went 7-1 and won his bracket with wins over state-place winners from Minnesota and Iowa.
“He wrestled with confidence,” Zachmeier said. “He looked tough. They all did well. Riley and Joey beat state-placers too.”
Zachmeier was pleased to see Volk, 12, wrestle tough as the youngest member of the group. The coach said there was a multitude of talented wrestlers from elementary-age to nationally ranked high schools.
Campers are schooled in nutrition, competition preperation, proper technique, warmup procedures and more. According to the camp’s website, 13 former J Robinson campers became state champions in 2013 and five former campers have won NCAA Division I titles.
