Rugby Midget teams host tournament

By Staff | Jun 20, 2014

It was a perfect day for baseball on Wednesday, as eight teams from around the area participated in the Rugby Midgets Baseball Tournament.

The 12-game tournament was held among two Rugby teams (Red and Blue), Rolla, Rolette, Bottineau, Dunseith, Belcourt and Towner. And it went smoothly.

“I’ve been running tournaments since I started working here,” tournament manager Alex McClintock said. “I’d say it went pretty well.”

In Rugby Blue’s first game, the team lost to Dunseith, 3-6. During that game, Dunseith’s Brenton Longie managed to score two home runs.

Rugby Blue’s second game, however, went better, as Rolla wasn’t quite up to snuff. Rolla walked four of Rugby’s players in the second inning, including Gavin Schepp, who was hit by a pitch early on. At the end of the game, Rolla’s Xavier Mitchel caught a fly ball at second base and tagged Timothy Mueller to put together an amazing double play to stop Rugby from scoring.

In Rugby Red’s second game, Rolette came away with a low-scoring triumph over Rugby with Cooper Medrud’s home run.

Packed with action, the grand finale of the day didn’t disappoint. Rugby Blue’s Mueller stole second base and third base in the top of the first and was quickly batted home.

Then Rugby Red went on a three run rampage to take the lead. The dynamic duo of the Schepp brothers each stole second after DJ Schneibel’s walk to first. Then in the next inning, Schneibel scored a home run to bring Devin Michaels home. Jaden Hamilton also hit a homer in the second inning.

Rugby Blue tried for a comeback in the second inning, but it wasn’t enough to break the three-run lead. Mueller hit a triple and brought Cody Jundt home in the bottom of the fifth to make a final score of 3-2.

Rolla vs. Rolette

With a clang of metal on baseball, Zach Anderson scored Rolette’s first run of the game. Then, in the next few innings Rolette’s pitcher Tyrese Gunville pulled a no-hitter to keep Rolla’s scoreless. After a few hits and no successs for Rolette at the plate, Rolla walked two Rolette players across the plate. In the end, Rolette won the shutout with a score of 5-0.
