RHS girls golf wins Region 4
The Rugby Panthers are Region 4 girls golf champions.
Junior-loaded RHS shot 404 to beat second-place Dunseith by 20 strokes at Star City Golf Course in Velva on Tuesday.
The Panthers dominated the eight-team field and had their entire scoring contingent in the top 10. The top 10 golfers are All-Region selections. RHS coach Leah Johnson was named the region’s coach of the year.
“They’re so talented they make me look good, so it’s really not about me at all,” Johnson said.
The Panthers team win earned them an automatic berth to the state tournament May 27 and 28 at Cross Roads Golf Course in Carrington.
“They did really well,” Johnson said. “It was a tough day. It was really windy, so they struggled on their approach shots, but they were able to recover well.”
Juniors Elizabeth Blessum and Darby Deckert led the squad, which was competing in its fourth meet in less than a week. Blessum and Deckert shared individual medalist honors with 98s, and junior Paige Johnson (Leeds) was fourth overall with a 101. ReeAnn Christianson rounded out the overall top 10 with a tie at 107 to join the others as All-Region.
“Darby and Elizabeth keep doing what they do every time, they’re so steady,” Leah Johnson said. “Paige is just so close to breaking that 100.”
The fourth-year coach said most of the team does not have finals next week, so they’ll likely travel to Carrington to get familiar with the state course.
“Everybody is playing well,” Leah Johnson said. “We have a couple players battling some demons, but we have time to adjust and work on those. We’re addressing the little things. They’ve played that course before and they’ve talked about what they remember.”
