RHS girls notch pair of wins
The Rugby High School girls basketball team picked up two District 11 wins. The Panthers beat host Dunseith 65-48 on Tuesday with a strong offensive performances throughout the backcourt. Sophomore guard Shea Heidlebaugh scored a game-high 22 points, junior guard Darby Deckert added 16 and senior guard Allison Volk scored 15.
RHS led by just three at the half, before pulling away.
Heidlebaugh scored a game-high 13 as every Panther contributed to a 61-13 blowout of visiting Drake-Anamoose on ‘Pink Out’ night Jan. 31. Senior forward Amber Jaeger had one of her stronger performances of the season with 12 points.
The Panthers hosted Westhope-Newburg on Friday and play at Velva on Tuesday.
TGU girls wins three games
The TGU girls basketball team continued its strong season in District 11 with wins over Drake-Anamoose and Westhope-Newburg.
The Titans beat the Sioux 61-31 behind the Thompson sisters on Jan. 30. McKenna scored 13 and McKayla added 11 as TGU raced out to a 27-10 lead at the half.
TGU snuck in a 49-34 non-district win over Turtle Lake-Mercer-McClusky on Feb. 1. Mattie Schmitt led all scorers with 15 and McKenna Thompson scored 10. The Titans led 14-0 after the first quarter and 47-19 entering the fourth.
The Titans dominated Drake-Anamoose 70-34 on Tuesday with Schmitt pouring in a staggering 32 points. McKenna Thompson scored 19.
Rolette-Wolford boys stumble
The Comets lost consecutive District 8 games beginning with a 75-59 defeat at the hands of North Star on Jan. 31. Alex Weston was too much with 31 points to lead the Bearcats. R-W was led by Casey Julson 21 points, and Trevor Gottbreht and Nick Myhre added 10 apiece.
North Star started hot and stayed that way after jumping to a 26-11 lead after the first quarter.
R-W didn’t recover very well as St. John blasted the Comets 98-49 on Tuesday. The Woodchucks exploded for a 27-point second quarter and led 46-17 at the break.
Sean Jay led three St. John players in double figures with a game-high 21. Myhre was the only Comet in double figures with 16.
Benson County falls to Rolla
The Wildcats had trouble with Rolla standout forward Karson Schoening, who scored a game-high 24 points in a 62-50 win. Benson County trailed by 12 at the half and cut the deficit to nine entering the fourth.
Dylan Lauinger and Kaleb Westad scored 17 and 16, respectively, for the Wildcats.
The TGU boys won a pair of games before falling to No. 1 Rugby on Monday. The Titans beat Turtle Lake-Mercer-McClusky 70-55 on Feb. 1, with senior Luke Bacon leading all players with 23 points. Kendal Green chipped in 15.
TGU held off a furious Sawyer rally in the fourth quarter to beat the Flashes 50-48. Sawyer trailed by 13 after three quarters, but found success with Colton Lund and Joshua Ulmer, who scored 14 and 12, respectively. Bacon scored a game-high 16 points.
