RHS wrestlers win two duals, take third in Rolla
The Rugby High School wrestling team had a strong week with dual wins over New Town and Harvey-Wells County on Jan. 17 and a third-place team finish at the Rolla Tournament the next day.
“Harvey had a couple good kids that were out and our young kids really wrestled well and stepped up to the plate,” RHS coach Craig Zachmeier said.
Zachmeier doesn’t read much into duals as he’s focused his team on strong individual goals for the region and state tournaments next month. A strong team finish today in the 24-team field at East-West Tournament in New Salem would impress him.
“We’re still going out to improve and going out to get mat time,” Zachmeier said. “I’m not gonna allow the kids to get (easy) pins. We need mat time and a lot of it at this point in the season.”
In Rolla, three Panthers took second place in their weight classes, including seventh-grader Riley Zachmeier (106), eighth-grader Kaden Jaeger (126) and junior Reid Mundahl (145). Zachmeier lost an 8-4 decision to Patrick Calvillo of Pembina County North. Jaeger dropped a 5-3 decision to Bishop Ryan’s Konner Beeter and Mundahl was pinned by PCN’s Blake Kaercher in the second round.
Getting to the championship matches marked improvement for all three wrestlers. Eighth-grader Joel Berg took third at 106 with a 2-1 decision over Konner Elliott from May-Port-CG. Junior Bennie Mygland (152) in just his second week of an injury-shortened season took third in his division with a pin of MPCG’s Keegan Elliott.
