Braves suffer first region loss

The Bottineau-Rugby hockey team fell for the first time in West Region play this season in a 7-4 game at Bismarck High on Jan. 11.

The Demons held a 3-2 lead at the second intermission, but exploded with four goals in the final frame to remain the No. 1 team in the West. Five BHS players scored including Jared Spooner and Tre Kautzman, who had two goals and two assists apiece. Spooner scored twice in the first six minutes of the third period as BHS improved to 12-2-0 overall and 7-1-1 in the region. The Braves dropped to 8-3 and 5-1.

B-R senior Harrison Aide scored first for the Braves with an assist from junior Luke Amsbaugh to make it 2-1 BHS late in the first period. Amsbaugh scored his state-leading 25th goal in the second period. Aide and junior Noah Grant scored in the third period.

Aide leads the state in points (24 g, 20 a) and Amsbaugh is second (25 g, 15 a).

B-R beat Williston 7-1 the night before as Aide scored a hat trick, Amsbaugh scored twice and seniors Nigel Hageness and Cody Bedlion had a goal apiece.
