RHS wrestlers struggle at Velva
The Rugby High School wrestling team is looking ahead after a rough performance at the Velva tournament on Dec. 7. RHS coach Craig Zachmeier wasn’t surprised by the lackluster showing, which led to the Panthers taking seventh out of 12 teams with no top-two individual placers.
“They just didn’t wrestle,” Zachmeier said. “Practices last week were mediocre. The intensity had dropped and it carried over to the weekend. We got kids who got beat by kids they pinned in New Town and that’s totally unacceptable to me.”
Senior Dylan Morin led the team with a third-place finish at 195 pounds, two weight classes above his usual competing class. Morin pinned Bishop Ryan’s Nathan Lee at the 36-second mark of the third round in the third-place match.
RHS had six varsity competitors for the tournament and finished with a combined 12-12 record. Senior heavyweight Alex Senger finished fourth and is expected to miss time with strained shoulder muscles.
Seventh-grader Riley Zachmeier, the coach’s son, finished fourth at 106 pounds and eighth-grader Kaden Jaeger was fifth at 132. The Panthers hosted Bishop Ryan and Northern Lights in a triangular Thursday and compete in the Carrington tournament today.
