Rugby’s Devon Berg cruised to the title in the 195-pound weight class at the Velva Invitational on Dec. 1.

Berg, who won all five matches he wrestled, pinned four opponents and earned a 15-0 shutout technical fall.

Berg earned pin victories over Jaryn Rasmussen of Stanley-Powers Lake-Tioga-Ray, Minot’s Tyler Kolobakken, Dakota Johnson of Bishop Ryan and Hunter Olson of Watford City.

“He is really coming on and working hard to become one of the best for his weight class,” Panthers head coach Mitch Meyer said.

Kaden Jaeger placed fifth in a packed and competitive 120-pound weight division. Jaeger went 3-2 on the day, falling to third-place finisher Kole Johnson of Des Lacs-Burlington in the second round.

“Kaden Jaeger had a good tournament in his first varsity action,” Meyer said.

Bennie Mygland, wrestling at 145 pounds, also finished in fifth after going 5-1 on the day.

“Bennie Mygland and Reid Mundahl continue to impress me with their abilities,” Meyer said.

Joey Berg also finished 2-2 in his first varsity action wrestling in the 106-pound division.

“The kids wrestled very good at the tournament,” Meyer said. “We have seen very good progression in our wrestlers so far but we (kids and coaches) realize that there is still things we need to improve on.”
