Rugby girls begin a new round of golf
Seven members of the Rugby girls golf team who played their first game of state competition last year are back to try again this year. Five other athletes have joined this year’s team, including two seniors who are playing golf for their first time on a team.
Rugby Coach Leah Johnson’s philosophy for her team remains the same as last year.
“We go out and have fun, learn something new and try to improve as the season progresses,” said Johnson. “The great thing about golf is it is both an individual and team sport so the girls can set individual goals.”
Practice starts on Monday, March 26. The first meet is scheduled for the first week in April. The schedule will be out soon.
Seniors Maddie Cameron and Marissa Rude have decided to try golfing their final year in high school. They will have veteran senior, Emily Steen, to lead the way. Rachel Mack and Hannah Steagall are the juniors on the team. Five freshmen, Darby Deckert, Elizabeth Blessum, Helen Johnson, ReeAnn Christianson and Hannah Voeller, and two seventh graders, Kara Aubrecht and Aspen Cameron, make up the rest of the team.
“I am excited,” said Coach Johnson. “Our girls did well last year, winning 2nd in the region and playing at state.”
Every team has state competition as their ultimate goal, but for Mrs. Johnson’s team, enjoying the sport and doing their best is what they are all about.
