Rugby boys take 3rd in Region
The Rugby Panthers won two games and lost one to earn 3rd in the Region Tournament held in Minot on Feb. 20-23. Although it didn’t buy them a ticket to state, Rugby had a great season overall with a 21-4 record.
In the first game, covered in last week’s Tribune, the Panthers beat Bishop Ryan 52-40 in an upset.
Rugby’s second game was against #2 seeded Berthold and they lost 57-40.
“Their length and defensive play caused us some problems,” said Rugby Coach Mike Santjer.
The Bombers took charge of the game from the very first quarter. At half-time the score was Bombers 34 to Panthers 20.
The Panthers also had trouble with rebounding. “It seems if we don’t rebound, the game doesn’t go our way,” said Santjer.
The Bombers did rebound and got quite a few points from those rebounds. They made eight 3-pointers to Rugby’s three. The two teams fared closely in free throw points and turnover points but Berthold made almost 3 times as many 2nd chance points.
Berthold’s Alex Bloms made a game total 27 points which was followed by Dan Yale with 14.
Rugby’s top two scorers were Kyle Lovcik with 13 points and Jayden Welk with 10. Andrew Hershey came though with 7 and Josh Michels put up 6. To round out the scoring Kyle Halvorson and Jaedon Haman each contributed 2 points.
In the game for third and fourth place Rugby played DesLacs Burlington and beat them 56-48. The Panthers took the lead in the first quarter 15-11 but DesLacs-Burlington answered back in the second quarter 19-12. At half-time DL-B had taken the lead 30 to 27.
“All our kids got to play in the first half,” said Rugby’s Coach Santjer.
In the third quarter, Rugby pulled it together and 18 points was added to their side of the scoreboard to DesLacs-Burlington’s 9 points. Once the Panthers pulled ahead, they kept the momentum going to the end.
“It was great teamwork with 11 players on the scoreboard,” added Santjer.
The top scoring leaders for the Panthers were Lovcik and Welk with 12 each. Halvorson and Hershey followed with 6 points each. Michels and David McAtee each shot 5 points, and Jaedon Haman 3. Chris Hamilton, Zach Leer, and Brad Heidlebaugh each contributed 2 points with Zach Miller making a free throw for 1 point.
The game ended with Rugby earning 3rd place in the region. Kyle Lovcik and Jayden Welk were both named to the All-Region Team. Both Lovcik and Welk were also named to the All-District Team.
The team loses six seniors to graduation this year. Santjer was well satisfied with his team’s season.
“Hopefully, there will be five seniors and we
will be right back there again next year,” said Santjer.
