Babe Ruth finishes season 11-5
The Rugby Babe Ruth Team finishes the season with a win-loss record of 11-5, including tournament play. The season was shortened by bad weather.
The District Tournament was held Monday, July 18 -Thursday, July 21 at Dunseith.
Cando and Rugby faced off in the first game. Cando came on strong in the first inning leading with three runs, Rugby got back in the game in the second inning with six runs, but Cando added four more runs to pull ahead once again 7-6. In the third inning, each team held the other to no runs and in the fourth inning each team added two runs with Cando in the lead 9-8. Rugby had a run in the fifth and held Cando to no runs to even the score at 9-9.
In the sixth inning, Rugby rallied with seven hits to Cando’s one, and Cando could not catch up in time. Rugby won the game 16-10. Cando had five hits to Rugby’s 10 and each team had two errors. Evan Burckhard was the winning pitcher.
Jaedon Haman led Rugby with three runs and hit three out of five at bats. Nigel Hageness stepped up with three hits out of four at bats and contributed two runs. Eli Luna also hit three out of four and brought in two runs. Chris Hamilton and Xylan Fly each drove home two runs to round out the scoring.
In game number 2 of the tourney played on Tuesday, July 19, Rugby took on Bottineau and lost 3-0. With the exception of three runs Bottineau made in the first inning, no one else scored the rest of the game. Defense was good on each team as each pitcher kept the other team from scoring in innings 2-7. In fact, Rugby was only credited with one hit made by Blaine Rosencrans. There were no errors recorded for either team. Eli Luna was the pitcher for Rugby.
On Wednesday, July 20, Rugby played Rolette. Jaden Pfiefer, Rolette, pitched a no hitter against Rugby. Rugby did manage to get on the board as a result of a walk and stolen bases in the second inning. The final score was 11-1. Rolette finished with 10 hits and 11 runs. Each team made one error.
Thursday’s game one, pitting Rugby against Velva, was a blowout with Velva taking the lead in the second inning 6-0 and carrying the game to the end for a 15-1 win over Rugby. Hamilton scored the only run for Rugby with one out of three at bats. Haman hit two out of three, Rosencrans hit one out of two and Anders Johnson hit one out of two. Evan Burckhard pitched the game for Rugby.
Rugby came back in the second game that same day against Velva winning 5-3. Rugby led the scoring in the first inning with four runs to Velva’s two. Neither side scored in the second inning and each team scored one in the third inning. Both teams were held to no runs in the final two innings of the 5-inning game. Haman brought home a run with one hit and three at bats. Luna who was the winning pitcher of the game, also brought home a run with one hit out of one at-bat. Johnson hit one for one.
The Babe Ruth team will hold their award ceremony this week. Results will be in next week’s paper.
