Team is off to a good start

By Staff | Jun 28, 2011

Rugby’s Babe Ruth team is off to a good start despite some minor weather setbacks here and there.

On Thursday, June 16, Rugby beat Belcourt 20-3 in five innings. Each team made a couple of errors, but the proof was in the batting. Anders Johnson had two hits with four at bats and drove in three runs. Rugby started off with 5 runs to Belcourt’s two in the first inning. After that Rugby just kept hitting, increasing its runs each inning. Belcourt added a final third run in the fifth inning but the writing was on the wall.

Eli Luna was the winning pitcher for that game. Luna also hit two out of five at bats and drove four guys home. Jadon Haman and Evan Burkhard each had two runs with Burkhard hitting two out of two. Xylan Fly hit one out of two and drove in one run.

On Monday, June 20, Rugby played Rolette for a 13-2 win. Rugby led the game with four runs in the first inning. Center fielder Blain Rosecrans, Towner, who plays on the Rugby team was in the starting lineup and did a great job with three out of five at bats and three runs. Eli Luna, another Towner player for Rugby, batted three out of five and drove in a run. Luna who was playing at shortstop for that game, made a spectacular catch in the third inning.

Jaden Haman added two runs and Nigel Hagness, Chris Hamilton, and Evan Burkhard each added a run.

Burkhard was the winning pitcher for Rugby with nine strikeouts. He gave up only two runs.

The game was completed in six innings.

Rugby has won all of its games this season, so far. They faced Cando on Thursday, June 23 with results in next week’s paper.
