Rugby boys play two double-headers
The Rugby Boys Baseball Team played two double-headers, winning two games and losing two games last week. Rugby’s record for the season is 6-4.
On Saturday, May 7 Rugby played a doubleheader against Surrey and won both games. Both were played in Surrey with Rugby as the home team in the first game and Surrey as the home team in the second game.
The senior pitching duo of Zach Thompson (Towner, playing with Rugby)) and Garrett Thompson (Rugby) were the winning pitchers. Garrett’s record is 2-0 with 18 innings pitched, 29 K and 2 BB. Zach has a record of 1-2 with 35 K and 10 BB.
In the first game Zach Thompson had one hit, 14 strike outs and 3 walks (BB). Surrey’s pitcher for that game was B. Schwan. Surrey led off the game with a run in the first inning making the score 1-0. Rugby answered with a run in the second inning, tying the game at 1-1. Rugby added three more runs in the third inning which gave them a nice lead of 4-1. After a couple of scoreless innings, Rugby added a run in the sixth. The game ended after seven innings with Rugby taking the win 5-1.
Highlights of the game included three runs made by senior Andrew Hershey who was 1-4. Riley Olsen was 1-3, Josh Michels was 1-3 and Z.ach Leer was 1-3.
In the second game at Surrey, Wyatt Thompson was the winning pitcher with 18 K, 2 BB and 1 error. Garret went 1-4.
Surrey’s pitcher for that game was D. Engst with 11K and 5 BB. In this game Srrey led off with the first run in the first inning. Rugby came back in the 2nd inning with a run to tie the game. The two teams remained tied at 1-1 through seven more innings sending the game into extra innings. In the 11th inning Rugby got a run to end the game 2-1.
In this second game, Zach Thompson got 2 runs, and 1-4, Alex McClintock earned a run, a double and 1-4, Riley Olsen was 2-5.
On Monday, May 9 Rugby played a double header with North Star at Rugby. North Star won the first game 5-4. Rugby had eight hits to North Star’s 5 and each team had one error.
North Star led 2 -0 in the second inning and picked up another point in the third. In the fourth inning, North Star brought in two more and Rugby added one for a score of 5-1. In the sixth Rugby picked up another run which made it 5-2 in favor of North Star. Rugby got one run in the seventh which was quickly followed by the first home run of the season by senior Alex McClintock bringing the score within one at 5-4.
The winning pitcher was J. Hagler with 3 K and 4 BB. Rugby’s pitcher was Riley Olsen with 6 K and 6 BB. McClintock contributed two RBI, 1 R and 2-3. Olsen had 1 R and 2-3. Zach Thompson got a run and 2-4.
Rugby started out the second game against North Star with one run in the first inning and two runs in the second inning to lead the game 3-0. North Star came back with 3 runs in the third inning and five runs in the fourth to take the lead away from Rugby 8-3. Rugby scored two in the seventh inning but it wasn’t enough to win the game which ended with North Star winning 8-5.
The winning pitcher was Grant Lindahl with 7K and 2 BB. Josh Michels pitched for Rugby with 9 K and 2 BB.
