Rugby boys place 2nd in District

By Staff | Feb 18, 2011

The Rugby boys won two out of three games to take 2nd place in District 11 play last week.

“The kids played really well all three games,” said Coach Mike Santjer.

Rugby beat Drake-Anamoose 66-22. The Panthers took the lead in the first quarter with 21-6, they added 17 points the second quarter to D-A’s five. Then in the third quarter Drake-Anamoose fought back outscoring the Panthers 20-9. But the Panthers got control back in the fourth quarter with 19 to D-A’s one.

Jason Goetz was the high point man for this first game of District play with 14. Andrew Hershey came off the bench and added 11 points to his team’s total. Eric Kuntz and David McAtee each contributed eight. Jayden Welk and Riley Olson each added six.

In the second game against Towner-Granville-Upham (TGU), Andrew Hershey stepped off the bench to produce 14 points for the team. Jayden Welk was right behind him with 13 points. Kuntz made 11, McAtee and Lovcik each had 10 points. Goetz added eight and Levi Schaan came up with five.

Good offense has been a challenge for the Panthers this season but their coach was pleased with district play.

“Offense came around in the first two games,” said Santjer.

The championship game Rugby played a hard fought game with Velva but lost 62-56 to achieve 2nd in the District 11 Tournament.

Again athletes that came off the bench played well in this game. Kyle Lovcik made 19 points followed by David McAtee with 15. Starters Goetz, Kuntz, and Welk contributed 8, 6, and 4 points and Hershey added four.

The game started out with the two teams playing well. In the first quarter the score was in favor of Rugby 16-15. The second and third quarters Velva took back the ball.

“I have to give it to Velva, they play good defense,” said Santjer.

It was the fourth quarter that really excited the crowd as the two teams went back and forth. Rugby scored 25 to Velva’s 22 that last quarter but Velva already had 40 points to build on and they won 62-56 in the last few minutes of the game.

Jason Goetz, Eric Kuntz, and Jayden Welk were named to the All-District Team.

The Panthers are scheduled to play Berthold for their first game of Regional play on Monday, Feb. 21. Berthold has ranked in state all season but took third in district play, so anything can happen.

“Our biggest thing is to fine-tune the offensive,” said Santjer. “We are going to put together a complete game and come to play on Monday.”
