R-W plays last three games before districts

By Staff | Feb 11, 2011

The Rolette-Wolford Boys played their last three games before district competition last week. On Thursday, Feb. 3, they played Towner-Granville-Upham (TGU) who beat them by a score of 68-43.

“We had a tough time against a very tough team,” said Coach Jesse Vote.

The good news is that the Comets had two players in double figures for that game. Chris Julson had 14 and Jaden Pfeifer added 11. Joe Mongeon and Everett Lervik each contributed 6 points.

Unfortunately for the Comets, TGU outshot them. Stetson Brandt put up 20 and Zach Thomspon followed with 10 points. Luke Bacon added 9 more points.

“We just didn’t rebound,” said Vote.

Boxing Out and getting those rebounds along with increasing good shooting are going to be a must for the Comets who are heading to the district tournaments on Feb. 11,12, and 14.

Rolette-Wolford played Rugby at Rugby on Saturday, Feb. 5. Rugby which is seeded #2 in the district defeated the Comets 49-34.

“This was close to one of the most complete games we’ve had,” said Vote. We played pretty good basketball.”

Chris Julson made 12 points in the game against Rugby. Jaden Pfiefer put up 6 and Mark Wibe 5.

Free throws were a problem for the Comets in this game. They made only 7 out of 18.

“We left too many out there,” said Volk.

The third game was against New Rockford-Sheyenne (NR-S) on Monday, Feb. 7.

“We tried a new defense and we were able to hang with them,” said Coach Vote.

The first half went well for the Comets although NR-S led in scoring throughout the game.

Defensively, the Comets Joe Mongeon played a good game, according to his coach.

“Mongeon was chasing Stephen Guler all night,” said Vote.

Guler, who is usually a high scorer, was held to 13 that night. Cobey Allmaras of NR-S made 16 points, Josh Edmonson, 12 and Mason Haley 10 for New Rockford-Sheyenne.

R-W’s Everett Lervik played well against New Rockford-Sheyenne. He made a double-double and managed 10 rebounds. The Comets were 9 for 16 at the free throw line.

The Comets will play Rolla in the district tourney on Friday, Feb. 10.

We will need to limit Cole Mitchell (Rolla),” said Vote. “We’ve got to box out and we’ve got to shoot.”
