Rugby Girls win 48-29

By Staff | Feb 7, 2011

“It’s been a long time since the Rugby Girls Basketball Team had a 5-0 record in district ,” recalled Coach Jen Brossart. After their win against Dunseith on Feb. 1 they were 5-0.

The win was an all out team effort with nine players on the scoreboard. Crystal Hovland made 11 points and 8 rebounds; Leigha Schmaltz made 7 points and grabbed 13 rebounds; Tessa Koenig made eight points and snagged five rebounds; Allison Volk made two 3-pointers for six points, no rebounds; Aubrey Hovland added five points to the scoreboard and nine rebounds; Molly Koenig received four points and seven rebounds; Abby Paul four points and three rebounds; Chandra Yankton added 2 points, no rebounds; and Sydney Kraft made a free throw and one rebound.

“They had a very good transition from offense to defense,” said Brossart.

The Lady Panthers had their best defensive effort of the season, according to their coach, and a total of 54 rebounds.

“We out rebounded them by 24,” said Brossart. “That’s probably what made the win.”

Schmaltz made five out of ten free throws while Crystal Hovalnd sunk three out of four. Aubrey Hovland made one attempt with one free throw point.

The girls had a full week off from games. “We had a solid week of practice and it shows,” said Brossart.

The girls have two district games left and they want to win them both. In order to do that the Panthers need to focus on each game.

Brossart said for the last five games of the season, “We take one game at a time and we have to be on our game for each one.”

The District 11 Tournament is less than three weeks away on Feb. 25-28.
