Rugby wrestlers successfully compete in two tournaments

The Rugby Panther wrestlers hosted two tournaments, recently.

The Panther Booster Wrestling Tournament was held Jan. 14 and 15. Twenty-one area teams participated. South Border won the tournament with 221.5 points.

Rugby had six wrestlers compete in the tournament with good individual results. Rugby’s team took 8th place in the weekend tourney with 72 points.

Wrestlers competing from Rugby were: 135# Wyatt Thompson who persisted to the championship match where he was defeated by Brock Nagel, Linton, 9-6; #140 Garrett Thompson who won the championship in his weight class with a major decision against Colten Lee, Velva, 13-2; #145 Kris Leier was defeated by Jesse Bear by fall; 2:02; #152 Zach Berube battled for third place, but was pinned by Abraham Roerich, Stanley, in 2:59; #160 Mike Ostrem was defeated in his attempt at fifth place by Anthony Dukart, Killdeer, 2-1; and 171# Dillon Morin was defeated on his way to third place by Aaron Ponzer, Harvey, by fall in 2:56.

“It was a Great Weekend as everyone wrestled to or well above what was expected,” said the coaching staff. “The wrestlers are improving. This is a great finish considering we only put six wrestlers on the mat.”

Rugby, Kenmare-Tioga-Ray, and New Town face off in Triangular

The three teams of Rugby, Kenmare-Tioga-Ray (K-T-R), and New Town faced off for competition on Jan. 18 in Rugby. It was Parents Night for the Panthers.

In the first match, Rugby earned 27 points to K-T-R’s 24. Six wrestlers competed from Rugby.

Wrestlers competing for Rugby had the following results: #119 Reed Mundahl wins by forfeit; #135 Wyatt Thompson by fall over Rhett Wolter, K-T-R; #145 Garrett Thompson by fall 2:43 over Braden Overson, K-T-R; #152 Zach Berube by fall 3:42 over Jeremiah McDonald, K-T-R; #160 Briot Nerhing, K-T-R, by fall 1:54 over Bennie Mygland. Rugby; and #171 Dylan Morin by decision (7-0) over Riley Syverson, K-T-R.

In the second match, New Town beat Kenmare-Tioga-Ray 42-30.

The third match was won by New Town 34 to Rugby’s 29.

Wrestlers competing for Rugby had the following results: 119# Reed Mundahl by Tech Fall (5:31) over Gerald Miranda, New Town; 135 # Wyatt Thompson won by forfeit; 140# Garrett Thompson won by forfeit;145 # Devon Berg won by forfeit; 152# Zach Berube by fall (:58) over McCrae Danks, New Town; 160# Billy Hall, New Town by major decision (17-8) over Mike Ostrem, Rugby; 171# McCrae Danks, New Town by fall 1:54 Dylan Morin, Rugby.

The Rolla Tourney will be held on Saturday, Jan. 22 at Rolla. On Thursday, Jan. 27 will be a match against Des Lacs – Burlington there.

Added note: Reed Mundahl and Devon Berg placed 4th and 5th at the State Jr. High tourney in Minot.
