Bottineau girls hockey team on a roll

By Staff | Jan 14, 2011

The Bottineau ladies 19 and under hockey team has been on a roll.

On Saturday, Jan. 8, they beat last year’s state champs, Sidney, Mont., 5-2. This win was followed by a 3-0 win over Langdon on Sunday in a game held in Rugby. The ladies have a win-loss record of 11-3 this season.

Bottineau co-ops with Rugby and there is one Rugby girl on the 19 and under team. A total of 10 girls play on this team. The younger team, 12 and under, has four Rugby players.

Allison Leer, who is on the 19 and under team, played on her home court at Al Wentz Arena on Sunday.

The coach for the girls is Curt Getzlaff of Bottineau. He has been coaching since 1970. Last year the Bottineau 19 and under team took fifth place in the state and they want to beat that this year. Getzlaff is a team coach. Rather than single out individuals, he talks about the team.

In the game against Langdon on Sunday in Rugby, the goalkeeper, #32, had a shutout with 16 saves. On Saturday against Sidney, goalkeeper #32 accomplished 19 saves for the team.

On Sunday’s game with Langdon the coach was able to skate three lines with a few of the 12 and under team playing with the older girls.

The Bottineau 19 and under ladies have their work cut out for them as the league has many tough teams. Crosby is one of those. Bottineau lost 6-3 to Crosby on Jan. 7. They will play Crosby again on Jan. 22 at Crosby.

In the meantime they will be honing their skills to reach their goal at state.
