Panthers take fourth in CNDC

The Rugby Panthers beat St. John 58-45 in the first round of the Central North Dakota Conference (CNDC) held in Harvey on Thursday, December 2.

“We ran a lot of kids and they coontributed all weekend,” said Panthers Coach Mike Santjer.

The five ahtletes starting for Rugby were Jason Goetz, forward,

Eric Kuntz, guard, Jayden Welk, guard, Levi Schaan, forward, and Andrew Hershey, center. The top three point getters on Thursday were Welk, 19, Goetz, 15, and Kuntz, 13.

On Friday, Dec. 3, Rugby took on Harvey-Wells County and lost 63-54. Harvey-Wells County took the lead in the first quarter. Rugby gained 15 points the second quarter which tied the score at 25-25. By the third quarter Harvey-Wells County took the lead again 41-39 and finished the win by adding 22 points to Rugby’s 15 in the last quarter.

The third day of tourney play was Saturday, Dec.4. Rugby played New Rockford-Sheyenne in the consolation round.

NR-S coming off a close game which they lost with TGU, ended the first period with a one point lead and beat Rugby 54-41. Jayden Welk, 16, Levi Schaan, 8, and Jason Goetz, 6, were Rugby’s top three scorers of that game.
