Panthers play well, but go down in Region 6 Tourney
The Rugby Panther girls played a good game, but went down in defeat to the Our Redeemer’s Knights in the first round of Region 6 Volleyball action on November 8 at the Minot Auditorium.
“The girls played a strong team last night,” said Coach Jessica Fritz. “They played hard and we had a great season.”
Rugby started out strong and won the first game 25-23, but, after that, the Knights, who had underestimated their opponent, went in for the kill to win 3-1.
Ashley Koppinger, Our Redeemer’s, led the way with 16 kills followed by Mataya Grigsby with 13. Sarah Christopher and Amanda Folden each added seven.
“With our blocking we forced them to tip the ball,” said Coach Fritz.
Senior Panther Crystal Hovland led her team with 13 blocks, 3 kills, and 4 digs. Molly Koenig and Tessa Koenig each contributed seven kills to the action. Molly Koenig also had one ace, four blocks and four digs. In addition to her kills, Tessa Koenig produced two aces, and five digs. Kenzie Cameron and Allison Volk each contributed 12 assists.
“This was a fun group of girls to work with,” said Fritz. “It really makes it fun when you have girls who understand the game and want to go out and play it.”
Rugby’s season is over with this loss, but Our Redeemer’s will go on to play against the Kenmare Honkers who have a 40-1 season record and are favored to win.
