Streak ends for Rugby juniors
The drive for five came up a bit short for Rugby’s junior/sub-junior trapshooting team.
The squad which had won the past four state titles had to settle for second place at the N.D. Trapshooting Championships held in Bismarck on July 21.
Rugby hit 445 out of 500 clay targets. Bismarck won the crown with a 475 team score. Minot was third at 430.
“We just ran into a buzz saw,’ said Randy Knain, Rugby team coach. “It’s hard to hang on to that title, but the kids did a nice job. Second isn’t too shabby.”
Rugby won the state title in 1998, 2004, 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2009.
“We have had quite a dynasty going,” Knain said.
Kyle Halvorson had the high score for Rugby, hitting 94 out of 100 targets. He finished third in the sub-junior singles category.
Other Rugby results included: Zach Howard, 92 out of 100; Matthew Oksendahl, 91 out of 100; Andrew Oksendahl, 91 out of 100; and Matt Mattern, 77 out of 100.
Rugby’s team was sponsored by Rugby Homes.
