Mat mania
There were probably a lot of sore muscles the next day for the men who participated in a first-ever Old-Timer’s wrestling exhibition in Rugby.
Their pain was temporary, perhaps, but their participation helped raise nearly $3,000 to start a local wrestling club.
Forty-two adults took part in the event which was coupled with a peewee wrestling dual tournament between Rugby, Carrington and Turtle Mountain (Belcourt) on April 3.
Mike Ostrem, tournament coordinator, said the event received good reviews and several former Rugby wrestlers living outside the area came back to take part. The tournament featured 11 brackets.
It’s possible another tournament will be planned next year, provided there is sufficient interest.
Local wrestling supporters want to establish a club which in part, will serve as feeder program for the junior and senior high wrestling teams. This club would hold regular practices and go to youth meets throughout winter.
Results from the tournament are included elsewhere on this page.
