Green flag to fall at GCS
Rugby’s Geographical Center Speedway will soon be buzzing with the sounds another racing season.
The green flag will fall on the track’s 23rd season on May 7, and four classes of races will be featured, says Tyler Dosch, local racer and speedway coordinator.
In addition to IMCA Stocks, Wissota Midwest Modifieds and Pure Stocks, IMCA Hobby Stocks will make its return to the GCS located at the Pierce County Fairgrounds.
Dosch is hoping to see an increase in car counts, adding there may be more Minot area drivers coming over to race, since Minot’s Nodak Speedway won’t begin its racing season until August.
“We may see more IMCA Stocks than in the past few years,’ he said.
Although the number of local drivers has declined over the years, there are still about a dozen who race on the local track, according to Dosch.
He said the support of businesses and a loyal fan base has enabled racing to continue in Rugby. “We’re still one of the smallest tracks in the state,’ he said.
There will be six racing programs – May 7 and 21; June 4 and 18; July 9 and 22. If necessary, a make-up date will be Aug. 6.
One of the highlights will be on July 9 when the GCS will again be the opening stop on the annual IMCA Stocks Dakota Modified Tour. That tour is being extended this year. In addition to Rugby, races will be held Underwood, Mandan, Dickinson, Williston and Estevan, Sask.
The season point titles will be determined on Championship Night on July 22.
