Rugby set to play at Northern Plains President’s Cup
Rugby’s high school-level boys hockey team will face Gillette, Wyoming on Friday, March 19 at 10:30 a.m. MST at the Northern Plains President’s Cup in Rapid City, S.D. Later that day, Rugby will face Rushmore, the host team at 6 p.m. MST.
Rugby will also play on Saturday, March 20, but its opponent is not yet known. If Rugby can win at least two games, it likely will advance to the placing round on Sunday, March 21.
Rugby has picked up a couple of players from Mayville-Portland and Watford City to fill out its roster, a move which is allowed under tournament rules.
Rugby (17-6-1) is fresh off its third place showing at the NDAHA state tournament.
This is the second year in a row the Ice Hawks have competed in the tournament which features some of the best teams in North and South Dakota and Wyoming and Montana. Grand Forks and Langdon are the other teams from North Dakota taking part. Richland (Sidney, Mont.), which competes in the NDAHA league, is also taking part.
The Ice Hawks went 1-2 at last year’s tournament.
