Rugby-Bottineau girls take fifth

By Staff | Mar 12, 2010

Rugby-Bottineau was seeded seventh entering the NDAHA 19U girls state hockey tournament.

The squad left with a fifth place trophy.

R-B defeated Breckenridge-Wahpeton 3-2 in the consolation championship on March 7 in Fargo, a successful end to the season.

Bottineau’s Ashley Blue scored all three goals in the game and finished with 11 in the tournament.

R-B opened the tournament with a 6-0 victory over Williston in a quarterfinal play-in game on March 4. Goalie Taryn Thorsell turned away 13 saves in the shutout.

Then the squad nearly pulled off a big upset over Fargo, the top seed from the east region, in the quarterfinals on March 5. Two goals by Blue in the third period forced overtime before Fargo won 3-2.

The squad rebounded to defeat Miles City, Mont. 3-1 in the consolation semifinals. Blue, Morgan Klebe of Bottineau and Rugby’s Carleen Shively scored in the contest.

This was the first year Rugby and Bottineau took part in the NDAHA league, so a fifth place showing was impressive.
