Rugby falls in semifinals at NDAHA state tournament

By Staff | Mar 7, 2010

The win streak had to come to an end some time. Unfortunately, for Rugby’s high school-level boys team, it came during a game they needed to win.

The No. 3 seeded Ice Hawks fell 3-2 to the No. 2 Fargo Flyers in the semifinals of the NDAHA state hockey tournament on March 5.

It was the second year in a row Rugby lost a one-goal decision to the Flyers in the semifinals.

Fargo’s Jason Lee scored just :49 seconds into the game before Rugby sophomore forward Kyle Volk tied the game at the 4:35 mark of the opening period. However, Lee would score two goals in a six second span to open up a two-goal lead later in the period.

Senior forward Chris Fedje would pull the Ice Hawks to within a goal late in the second period when he deflected defenseman Pake Hagen’s shot while Rugby was on a two-man advantage power play.

Rugby poured the shots on in the final period, but could not get the equalizer. The loss snapped the Ice Hawks 11-game win streak against league opponents. Senior Chris Seaver made 25 saves. Fargo goalie Cody Sturfaugson, meanwhile, stopped 46 Rugby shots.
