Rugby advances at NDAHA state tournament

Rugby scored three first period goals and rolled to a 9-3 quarterfinal win over Watford City at the North Dakota Amateur Hockey Association’s high school-level state tournament on Friday, March 5 in Grand Forks.

The victory propelled the No. 3 seeded Ice Hawks into the semifinals on March 6 to meet either the Fargo Flyers or Mayville-Portland.

Sophomore forward Kyle Volk scored three goals – all coming in the second period. The two teams combined for seven goals in the middle frame.

The win was Rugby’s third over Watford City this season.

Defenseman Aaron Teigen amd forwards Leo Hoffert and Chris Fedje scored goals in the opening period.

Watford City cut the lead to two goals, but the Ice Hawks would break open the game with goals by Volk, Jordon Kuhnhenn and Parker Collins.

Tanner Lunde also scored for the Ice Hawks which improved to 16-5-1 overall and extended its winning streak to 12 games, including 11 in a row against league opponents.

Rugby’s Thomas Seaver made 16 saves in goal.
