Minnewaukan-Leeds upends Rolla-Rock Lake at District 8 Tournament

Seventh-seeded Minnewaukan-Leeds won just one District 8 game during the regular season.

The Lions matched that in just one game at the District 8 Tournament in Langdon. M-L upset No. 2 Rolla-Rock Lake 70-67 on Friday, Feb. 26 to move on to the semifinals on Saturday, Feb. 27 to face No. 3 Munich-Starkweather.

Junior Matt Swanson had 22 points and sophomore Darren Young added 20 for the Lions who avenged a loss to the Bulldogs earlier this season.

In another first round games, No. 4 St. John defeated No. 5 Rolette-Wolford 50-40.

It was the second time this season St. John defeated the Comets. R-W led by senior Blake Nelson and Nic Pfeier, scoring 11 and 10 points respectively. The loss moved R-W into a region-qualifying game on Monday, March 1. St. John advanced to the semifinals to face No. 1 North Star (Cando) on Feb. 27.

No. 3 Munich-Starkweather defeated No. 6 and tournament host Langdon 57-38 to gain a semifinal berth. Langdon will face No. 2 Rolla-Rock Lake in loser-out play on Saturday, Feb. 27.
