Thompson advances to semifinals at Class B state wrestling meet

Rugby junior Wyatt Thompson advanced to the semifinal round of 130 pound division at the Class B state wrestling tournament on Feb. 18.

Thompson defeated Cole Kupper of Killdeer by pin in his opening match and then topped Kyle Brown of North Border by a 6-0 decision in the quarterfinals.

Junior Garrett Thompson won his first match at 140 pounds, pinning Lane Oversen of Killdeer before falling the quarterfinals to James Murphy of Carrington. Thompson will now compete in round two of wrestlebacks on Feb. 19.

Five other Panther wrestlers are competing at state, but dropped their first round match.

Josh Tank was pinned at 135 pounds by Brady Lund of Watford City. Michael Steen lost by decision to Jordon Thomsen of Valley City at 145 pounds. Zach Berube fell by pin to Jared Weinand of Hazen-Beulah at 152 pounds. Michael Ostrem lost by decision to Kalin Mogen, of Watford City.

Those five were in the first round of wrestlebacks on Feb. 19.
