Seven wrestlers qualify at Region 3 meet

By Staff | Feb 18, 2010

Rugby figured six wrestlers had a strong chance of qualifying for the Class B state meet with a good showing at the Region 3 Individual Meet on Feb. 13.

The squad did one better.

“I was hoping for six, but my wrestling dreams were answered when we qualified seven,’ said Rugby coach Ken Higbee.

Seven Panthers finished fourth or higher at the Feb. 13 meet in Burlington, including a champion at 130 pounds.

Junior Wyatt Thompson, who was seeded No. 1, won that division, posting a 2-0 record. He pinned Velva’s Colten Lee at 3:11 in the championship match.

Junior Josh Tank at 135 pounds and senior Michael Steen at 145 pounds also reached the finals of their division, but settled for second place. Both were seeded second.

Tank finished 1-1, losing to Cody White of Des Lacs-Burlington by fall at 3:30 in the championship. Steen lost by fall to Anthony Lafontaine of Minot Ryan at 3:50 in the title.

Garrett Thompson posted a 3-1 mark and finished third at 140 pounds. Thompson was seeded fourth, but defeated No. 3 Abraham Roehrich of Stanley by a 3-2 decision in the third place match.

Zach Berube finished in third place 152 pounds. He was seeded third and pinned Alex Monk of Velva at 3:51 in the third place match. Berube went 2-1 in his matches.

Michael Ostrem placed fourth at 160 pounds. Ostrem, who was battling sickness, ended up having to forfeit his third place match to Ivan Wilson of New Town. “He was in pretty tough shape and we glad he wrestled well enough to qualify under the circumstances,’ Higbee said.

Ostrem, the second seed, was 1-2 in his matches.

Rugby seventh grader Reid Mundahl, making his regional debut, placed fourth at 103 pounds. Mundahl, seeded third, posted a 2-2 record. He lost his third place match to Daniel Becker of Minot Ryan by pin in :38.

Mundahl was also battling sickness, but wrestled well enough to place.

Four other Panthers competed in the meet. Alex McClintock placed sixth at 215. John Holms (285); Brandon Sunaert (125); and Thomas Kleespie (171) all went 0-2 and did not place.

Although Velva-Garrison had just two individual champions, 10 more Aggies placed second, third or fourth to qualify for the state meet. Rolla-St. John was a distance second and Des Lacs-Burlington was third.

Rugby finished fifth overall.
