Rugby moves on at District 11 Tournament

By Staff | Feb 12, 2010

A scrappy Towner-Granville-Upham team stayed with Rugby for the first three quarters, but the Panthers’ offense made a fourth quarter run to pull away for a win in the opening round of the District 11 girls basketball tournament on Feb. 11 in Drake.

The No. 6 seeded Titans were hoping for a big upset and avenging two earlier losses to Rugby this season.

T-G-U started well, and enjoyed a lead as big as nine in the opening half. T-G-U led for stretches in the third quarter as well, but just couldn’t get a big enough lead in the second half to put a big scare in the Panthers.

Rugby’s talent and experience came through in the final eight minutes to turn a close game into a 51-40 win. Junior Emily Paul had a big night, scoring a season-high 20 points.

T-G-U was led by Taylor Stone’s 11 points. Eighth grader Mattie Schmitt had 10.

The win advanced Rugby to a semifinal showdown with No. 2 Bottineau on Feb. 12. T-G-U, meanwhile, met No. 7 Drake-Anamoose in a loser-out game.
