Coming home to play
There will be basketball and hockey going on in Rugby on Saturday, Dec. 26, but the athletes are playing for pride more than anything.
The Charles Hanneman Gymnasium will be full of former Rugby boys basketball players taking part in an alumni tournament.
This is the sixth tournament held, and as in past tournaments, players will be grouped based on their graduation year. The tournament will begin at 9 a.m. and about 55 players have registered, according Greg Foster, tournament coordinator. There will be two pools with three teams in each one. Proceeds go toward the Bill Monson Memorial Scholarship.
The Al Wentz Arena will also be hosting an alumni event. Former Rugby Ice Hawks players are invited to play that day.
Although the format has changed from a two-day tournament to a one day event, Kal Triplett, organizer, is hopeful a good number of players will take part.
This is the third year in a row a hockey alumni event has been held. The game will begin at 10 a.m. There is not set registration fee, but players will be asked to give what they can to help cover the costs of ice rental and perhaps pay for a lunch. Any remaining proceeds would go toward the Rugby Amateur Hockey Association.
