Randy Westby wasn’t ready to relinquish the Rugby men’s club title just yet.
The defending club champion topped Keith Duchscher 3 and 2 in the finals of the match play championship flight on Aug. 9,and became a five-time winner of the tournament.
Westby, who won titles in 1991, 2003, 2005 and again last year, also became the first back-to-back champion in a decade.
He was seeded No. 1 in the eight-player championship flight, defeating No. 8 seed Brett McAtee in the first round and then No. 5 Rob Hovland in the semifinals.
Duchscher reached the championship for a third straight year by topping No. 6 Rick Bruggeman in the first round and No. 2 Corey Espe in the semifinals.
Espe, who carded a five-over round of 78 to earn medalist and low handicap honors in the 18-hole qualifier a day earlier, finished third, defeating Hovland. Bruggeman rallied for fifth place.
Daniel Gannarelli won the first flight, defeating Lance Zietz in the championship match. Gannarelli needed to rally in his semifinal match over Randy Deckert. He opened with a win over Dan Schneider. Zietz reached the finals with match wins over Byron Nilsen and Kendall Schieve.
