Rugby Junior team wins another title
Make it four for four for the Rugby Gun Club junior trap shoot team.
The squad claimed its fourth straight North Dakota Trapshooting title, besting 10 others at the recent state shoot held in Minot on July 18.
The five-member team hit 910 out of a possible 1,000 clay targets. The shooters were Jake Knain, Andrew Oksendahl and Matthew Oksendahl, all of Rugby; Zach Howard and Austin Erickson, Devils Lake.
“They were the last team to shoot, and it can be hard to wait around to the end before shooting, but they were relaxed and posted a good score,’ said Randy Knain, team coach.
Andrew Oksendahl posted the top score on the team, hitting an impressive 195 out of 200 targets. He also won the junior open singles title.
The score was 32 targets better than the runner-up, a team from Minot. This was the first year the team competition featured 200 targets per shooter. In previous competitions, participants shot only 100 targets.
“It’s harder to stay focused (shooting more targets),’ Knain said.
The squad previously won titles in 1998, 2004, 2006, 2007 and 2008 and should be tough to beat next year, as they lose just one member – Jake Knain – who will be too old to compete in the junior class.
