A fine finish
Towner-Granville-Upham’s boys basketball team won just 10 games this season, but there still was a feeling of accomplishment when the Titans left the floor following the Region 6 Tournament’s third place game.
T-G-U edged Surrey 42-40 in Minot on March 12 to capture third, avenging an early season loss to the Mustangs and ending a rather rollercoaster year on a good note.
Ian Keller’s steal and layup with less than a minute to play provided the Titans the difference. Surrey’s final shot attempt missed the mark.
Surrey led by four points after one quarter, but T-G-U responded with an 11-6 second quarter to take a one-point lead at halftime. Surrey regained the lead in the third quarter, but T-G-U ended the game strong, pulling out the win. Senior Mitch Smette paced the Titans with 11 points.
The Titans (10-15) began 0-7 but won 10 of their last 18 games, including a 4-2 postseason mark. This was T-G-U’s highest finish at regionals since placing third in 2003. Titan coach Shane Walker said the nice postseason run should bode well for the returning players.
